MANUAL LYMPHATIC DRAINAGE

GENTLE MASSAGE

GENTLE MASSAGE

Manual Lymphatic Drainage is a highly specialized massage technique designed to improve the functioning of the lymphatic system. It involves the application of gentle, rhythmic pressure to the lymph nodes and vessels located beneath the skin to facilitate the movement of lymph fluid throughout the body. This technique helps eliminate waste products, toxins, and bacteria filtered out of the lymphatic system and into the bloodstream.

  • Manual lymphatic drainage is a light-touch modality that reduces swelling of the face or body through specialized skills, techniques, and practices.

  • You should prepare for our session by properly hydrating and avoiding a large meal before you come to see us.

  • Anyone can get a lymphatic massage or body rub done, but it’s most often recommended for people after surgical procedures, physical trauma, or infection.

Lymphatic System

The lymphatic system is critical in maintaining the body's immune system. It is responsible for filtering out impurities and waste products from the circulatory system and transporting them to the appropriate organs for elimination from the body. However, if the lymphatic system becomes overwhelmed or congested, it can lead to a build-up of toxins and waste products, which in turn can cause a range of health problems and even compromise the immune system.

Manual Lymphatic Drainage works by applying gentle pressure to the lymph nodes and vessels, which helps to stimulate the flow of lymph fluid and promote the elimination of waste products from the body. This technique is particularly effective in treating conditions such as lymphedema, which is a condition characterized by swelling in the arms or legs due to a build-up of lymphatic fluid. By improving lymphatic function, Manual Lymphatic Drainage can help to reduce swelling, improve circulation, and promote overall health and well-being.

Benefits of Treatment

Manual Lymphatic Drainage has a simple objective: to help drain lymph fluid and ensure the lymphatic system is working properly. The biggest and perhaps most immediately noticeable benefit is a significant reduction in pain and swelling. However, Manual Lymphatic Massage comes with many additional benefits:

  • Helps reduce water retention

  • Helps reduce and remove toxins from the body

  • Helps relieve symptoms of anxiety, depression, insomnia, and more

  • Faster regeneration and healing of burns and scars

  • Visibly decrease skin puffiness

  • Improved circulation

  • Can help with weight loss

  • Can help relieve fibromyalgia and arthritis pain

Is Manual Lymphatic Drainage Right For Me?

If you're having difficulty with fluid movement in your body, Manual Lymphatic Drainage may be a helpful solution. This technique is particularly useful for those experiencing swelling, as it can aid in reducing pain and promoting healing. It's often recommended for patients in oncology, sports injury, and post-surgical medical situations. Additionally, Manual Lymphatic Drainage can be beneficial for the following health concerns:

  • Lymphedema

  • Fibromyalgia

  • Edema

  • Skin disorders

  • Arthritis

It may also help benefit those who suffer from migraines, digestive problems, insomnia, and stress.

Lymphatic Drainage Frequency

Because a lymphatic massage or body rub is so gentle, you can be treated pretty frequently. While you shouldn’t have a massage done more than once a week, you can go multiple times a week if needed. Depending on the severity of your condition, highly frequent treatments may be necessary in the beginning. Your Artistry & Wellness specialist will create a personalized treatment plan upon your first visit.

After Lymphatic Drainage

Once you’re finished with your initial round of Manual Lymphatic Drainage treatments, you must do your part to maintain the proper function of your lymphatic system. While regular massage may be necessary to keep things in tip-top shape, there are a few things you can do on your own to help keep things working:

  • Dry brushing. Also known as “skin brushing” this promotes lymph flow as you brush in the same direction that the lymph travels.

  • Exercise, stretching, and yoga. Unlike the circulatory system, the lymphatic system doesn’t have a pump. It relies on your movement and muscle contractions to keep flowing.

  • Eat a cleaner diet. Avoid packaged and processed foods when possible, and opt for fresh, natural, whole foods. This reduces toxins coming into your body, therefore making the job of the lymphatic system easier.

  • Avoid tight clothing. Tighter clothes can restrict the movement of lymph fluid, especially when worn for long periods. Wear loose-fitting clothes whenever possible.
