Recovery Tips

Maintain A Healthy Diet

A healthy and balanced diet can give your body the necessary fuel and energy to heal post-surgery. Opting for a diet that comprises lean protein, fruits, and vegetables can help reduce swelling and bruising. It's advisable to limit salt intake as it can exacerbate swelling. Protein-rich foods can promote skin and muscle regeneration and accelerate wound healing. Additionally, antioxidant-rich fruits like strawberries, grapefruits, and watermelons can aid in a speedy recovery.

Go For A Walk

Taking it slow for the first couple of days after surgery is essential. But once you feel up to it, a daily walk can help get your blood flowing and speed up healing. However, avoiding strenuous exercise for at least two to three weeks is best. Your surgeon will provide guidance on which activities are limited during the early recovery period. Following their advice regarding what activities to engage in and which to avoid is crucial.

Wear Compression Garments

After the procedure, your surgeon will provide you with a compression garment. Wearing this garment for several weeks is crucial to minimize swelling and bruising. The compression garment will also help your skin conform to your slimmer profile. It's essential to ensure adequate rest, especially if there is no loose skin after the procedure.

Don’t Smoke Or Drink

To promote speedy healing, it's crucial to refrain from smoking and drinking alcohol. Smoking hinders the healing process, and avoiding it for at least one month post-surgery is recommended. Alcohol dehydrates the body, impeding recovery and making scars more noticeable. Therefore, it's best to avoid alcohol for the first month following the procedure.

Drink A Lot Of Water

Staying hydrated by drinking plenty of water is essential for flushing toxins out of your system and promoting healing. Aiming for at least six to eight glasses of water per day is recommended.

Get Rest

It's essential to prioritize rest and healing for your body. Make sure to have a comfortable place to rest, such as a bedroom or couch, and take advantage of it during the first few days. Avoid physical activity beyond a short daily walk until your surgeon clears you for more. However, keeping your blood flowing by moving a little bit each day is crucial.

Take Pain Medication If You Need It

It is normal to feel tired and experience soreness after undergoing a medical procedure. It is advisable to take the prescribed pain medication given by your surgeon if necessary. This medication may be required for the initial days post-procedure. However, subsequent pain can typically be alleviated with over-the-counter medication.

Ask For Help

Having someone around to assist you at home during the initial 24-48 hours post-procedure is crucial. Discussing the matter with a close friend or a family member beforehand is advisable to check if they can stay with you during this period. If you have young children, you will require assistance with them for at least the first week. Additionally, you must arrange for a reliable person to drive you back home after the surgery.
